Pediatric Pulmonary Function Testing in Miller Place, NY
On-site pulmonary function testing for children and teens, performed and interpreted
by a board-certified pediatric pulmonologist, with results explained to families in plain language at the same visit. Serving Miller Place, the North Shore of Long Island, and surrounding Suffolk County communities.
What Is Pulmonary Function Testing?
Pulmonary function testing — usually called PFT — measures how well a child’s lungs are working: how much air they can move, how fast they can move it,
and how their airways respond to a bronchodilator. It is one of the few tests
in pediatrics where the result genuinely changes the plan. PFT is what confirms
or rules out asthma when the diagnosis is unclear, what tracks whether
a controller medication is working, and what tells the family whether the wheeze the pediatrician hears is producing real airflow obstruction.
At Little Lungs of Long Island, PFT is performed on site and interpreted
by Dr. Masson herself, not sent out to a lab, not read days later
by a different provider.
Our Approach
Pediatric PFT is not the same as adult PFT. Children need pediatric-adapted protocols, age-appropriate coaching, and an examiner who knows how
to coax a usable effort out of a six-year-old. Dr. Masson and the Little Lungs team perform spirometry and bronchodilator response testing in the office, using equipment and software designed for children. Most school-age children can complete a usable test on their first visit; younger children may need a practice visit first.
Once the test is done, results are reviewed with the family before they leave the office. No phone calls a week later. No portal messages with charts that nobody explains. Dr. Masson walks parents and patients through what was measured, what it means, and what — if anything ought to change as a result.

Who It’s For
Who Benefits from Pulmonary Function Testing?
PFT is appropriate for any child old enough to follow simple coaching instructions — usually around age five or six — whose breathing symptoms warrant objective measurement. That includes children being evaluated for new-onset asthma, children whose asthma diagnosis is uncertain, athletes with exercise-induced symptoms, children with chronic cough that hasn’t responded to treatment, and children on controller medications who need their progress tracked over time. PFT is also appropriate for families seeking a second opinion who want their child’s lung function objectively re-measured.
Little Lungs performs PFT for children and adolescents through age 21. Younger children whose symptoms warrant testing are evaluated case by case.
